Philip P. DiStefano

Philip P. DiStefano served as the 11th chancellor of the Âé¶¹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØ from 2009 to 2024, becoming the longest-serving chancellor in the university’s history. A first-generation college graduate, he spent his entire 50-year career at Âé¶¹Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂÔØBoulder, beginning as an assistant professor in the School of Education in 1974. Over his 15-year tenure as chancellor, he led the university through the COVID-19 pandemic and oversaw record growth in research funding, student enrollment, and campus facilities.

Before becoming chancellor, DiStefano held several key leadership roles, including provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, dean of the School of Education, and interim chancellor during pivotal periods. His leadership contributed to record-high student retention and graduation rates, successful fundraising campaigns, and the development of the Flagship 2030 strategic plan.

He earned his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, a master’s degree from West Virginia University, and a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State. After retiring as chancellor in 2024, DiStefano returned to the School of Education faculty and continues to serve as Senior Executive Director of the Center for Leadership.
