In November, we recognize and celebrate Native American and Indigenous community members in our college. This is a time to celebrate cultures, traditions, and histories, as well as to acknowledge the important contributions of the original inhabitants of North America. We seek to bring awareness to our engineering community about Native tribes and the unique challenges Native people have faced, both historically and in the present.��

We wanted to also congratulate the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) who participated in the 2023 as the "�鶹��Ѱ��Trailblazers", sweeping first place in all their categories and a grand prize trip to the Kennedy Space Center.

Scholar Spotlight

Lupita Ramirez

Lupita is a fourth-year student receiving a BOLD Center scholarship and part of the GoldShirt program. She is��pursuing a biomedical engineering major and an electrical engineering minor.��

Did you always know you wanted to pursue STEM or engineering?��I always like math and science and always leaned towards STEM. I didn't know that biomedical engineering was a major. I was always interested in medical devices and prosthetics and hope to give back to people and provide them better accessibility.

Favorite aspect about the BOLD and Boulder?��My community has come from the BOLD program and the scholarship program helped me come out of my shell. I really like the student societies at the BOLD Center and there were other student communities. For a while, I was part of WOAA for a semester and an active member of SHPE. I was able to attend a conference and appreciated that opportunity to be offered to make connections with companies and learn about what companies are looking for.��

What advice for others?��I had a lot of moments when I doubted finishing my degree, especially finishing�� my core biomedical classes. I would have not been able to do it had I not asked for help and realized it’s crucial to do so. During my first-year, I was always afraid to ask for help. As long as your professors see that you want to better yourself, they’re more than happy to help and wish I did that early on.��

Amanda McKenzie (Coordinator for Community and Student Support)

What would you like our BOLD community to know about you?��Hi! I am Amanda, the newest addition to the BOLD Center! I am excited to be starting in the role of Coordinator for Community and Student Support. I want the BOLD community to know that I am an open book. You are welcome to ask me anything and I will tell you if I don’t feel comfortable answering. I am a first-generation student, I’ve traveled to 5/7 continents and over 40 countries, I love crafting and video games, and I enjoy using my creativity in all aspects of my life (especially cooking and baking). I am also a �鶹��Ѱ��alumna and have worked in 7 offices on campus. I look forward to meeting you all and getting to know you better, so please stop by and say hello!

What is your favorite aspect about the BOLD Center?��I love that the BOLD Center is a community. You can feel the positive energy when you enter the space. People are always laughing, joking, or studying together. It feels like walking into a home.��

Favorite places��travelled? I have 3 favorite places that I have traveled to: 1) Greece, 2) Egypt, 3) Japan. I am a huge nerd about ancient history. I was able to study abroad in Greece as an undergraduate and did archaeology out there. I went to every museum I could and took over 2,000 pictures of artifacts. When I went to Egypt, it was when the pyramids were still open to the public to walk into, and it is an experience I’ll never forget. Japan is such a cool place because there is both a rich history and many modern advancements. Depending on where you are, it is a very different adventure!

Lab Venture Challenge Showcases Nov. 8 & 9, 2023

At the Lab Venture Challenge (LVC) Showcases, top �鶹��Ѱ��innovators, many from �鶹��Ѱ��Engineering, vie for grants up to $125,000, supporting projects with commercial potential in the bio and physical sciences; this is the can't-miss event to see CU's breakthrough innovations.

The showcases are free with registration. Attendees must register in advance. Seating is limited, and at-the-door registration is not guaranteed.

UROP’s Zoom into Research & Creative Work

Thursday, November 9 from��5��– 6��p.m., virtual

Meet faculty and learn about the exciting work they do outside the classroom! In this fully virtual event, UROP hosts light-hearted interviews with faculty from a wide range of departments, then you meet in breakout rooms.

Though you may connect with a potential project mentor, the purpose of the event is to help you develop confidence in approaching faculty about research and creative work—while highlighting many paths to success. Students who participate are likely to be surprised by the less direct and more failure-marked stories of the successful faculty behind the impressive headlines—and find more in common!
