Our Research Focus

Our lab investigates how bilingual children acquire and use language within their diverse social and cultural environments, with a particular focus on those who speak one language at home and learn another in school. We seek to understand how language experience shapes development across both languages and how these processes intersect with developmental language disorder (DLD). Although millions of children in the United States grow up learning two languages, most available clinical assessments are designed for monolingual populations, leading to frequent misdiagnosis and missed opportunities for intervention. Our research addresses this critical gap by examining bilingual language learning in natural settings, developing culturally responsive assessment tools, and designing effective intervention strategies. Through these efforts, we aim to advance equitable clinical practices and inform educational policies that better serve linguistically diverse children and their families.
