�鶹��Ѱ��Boulder and the Colorado Energy Office on Monday, March 30, released two state-funded feasibility studies evaluating whether geothermal energy could help reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions over the long term.

The studies evaluated both shallow geothermal systems, which are well known and commonly used for campus heating, and cutting-edge deep geothermal systems that could provide heat or electricity. Findings show geothermal systems of both types are technically feasible on campus and could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, though implementation would require major infrastructure changes and long-term investment.

The work provides �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder with valuable technical data and planning insight as the university advances its Climate Action Plan and broader decarbonization strategy, which includes cutting campus carbon emissions 50% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality no later than 2050.

“Evaluating frontier technologies like deep geothermal is an important step as we work toward our Climate Action Plan goals and explore pathways to reduce emissions across campus,” said Andrew Mayock, vice chancellor for sustainability.

“Our campus also serves as a living laboratory where research and campus operations come together to test and evaluate innovative energy solutions that can inform sustainability efforts well beyond �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder. Moreover, this state-supported study is a great example of the continued leadership of the state of Colorado and highlights the importance of partnership."

Deep geothermal systems can extend more than 20,000 feet underground, far deeper than shallow systems that typically operate less than 1,000 feet deep. While less widely deployed, deep geothermal systems could offer an opportunity to test emerging clean-energy technologies at scale.

No construction or implementation decisions are being made at this time. Instead, the studies are intended to serve as planning resources to inform future energy and infrastructure decisions as campus strategies, funding opportunities, partnerships and governance approvals continue to evolve.

That broader work is already underway. Last summer, �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder selected an engineering partner to begin designing a campuswide decarbonization plan focused on transitioning heating systems away from steam and toward low-temperature hot-water systems powered by carbon-free energy sources.

“Colorado continues to lead the way in harnessing the heat beneath our feet to create a cleaner, more affordable energy future,” said Colorado Energy Office Executive Director Will Toor. “By investing in these feasibility studies at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, we are not just helping generate data and technical insight—we are empowering our institutions to serve as blueprints for decarbonization. These projects are a vital step toward reducing emissions, improving our air quality, and proving that clean energy solutions can protect our state for future generations.”

The studies were funded by the Colorado Energy Office Community District Heating/Thermal Energy Network (Agreement GAE 25-2370) and Geothermal Electricity Generation (Agreement GAE 25-2398) grants awarded to �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder in November 2024. The grants supported 59% of the study costs.

The results of a study involving future use of geothermal energy by the �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder campus will help inform the university's decarbonization plan, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by no later than 2050.

The University of Colorado Board of Regents has announced its selection of recipients of honorary degrees, distinguished service awards and university medals for 2026, including two �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder affiliates.

Given since 1882, the regent awards include:

Honorary degrees, which recognize outstanding achievement in one or more of the following areas: intellectual contributions, university service, philanthropy and/or public service.
Distinguished service awards, which recognize those persons whose achievements and contributions are particularly associated with the state and/or nation.
University medals, which recognize those persons whose achievements and contributions are particularly associated with the university.

The 2026 �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder awardees are William King, the second tenured African American professor at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, and Alice Mortenson, a renowned philanthropist and community leader who co-founded the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering and Resilience.

William King, honorary degree

King, professor emeritus at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, is a distinguished scholar, educator and community leader. He was the second tenured African American professor at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder and the university’s longest-serving Black professor (1972–2012) in history, known for pioneering contributions to Black studies, transformative teaching and dedication to social justice.

During his 40-year career, King played a pivotal role in establishing �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s Black studies curriculum, which later evolved into the Department of Ethnic Studies. He designed and taught numerous groundbreaking courses, including Black Religious Life in America and The Civil Rights Movement, inspiring generations of students. A founding member of the National Council for Black Studies, King also served as its chairman and historian, shaping the discipline nationally.

An accomplished author, King has published books, scholarly articles and essays that explore African American history, science and public policy. His widely cited work has enriched academic discourse.

Beyond academia, King has served as chairman of the Urban League of Metropolitan Denver and contributed to organizations such as the Black American West Museum and Colorado Historic Preservation Review Board.

Alice Mortenson, honorary degree

Mortenson is a renowned philanthropist and community leader who has made exceptional contributions to education, public service and global development. Her enduring legacy of advocacy, collaboration and generosity has left a profound impact on �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder and communities worldwide.

Mortenson—alongside her late husband, M.A. “Mort” Mortenson Jr.—co-founded the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering and Resilience at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder in 2009. The center has impacted over five million lives globally through innovative solutions addressing water, sanitation and resilience challenges.

The center and its affiliates are involved in such international research programs as the Sustainable WASH Systems partnership, Bill Gates’ Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, and the Drought Resilience Impact Platform. Graduate students participating in field practicums benefit from partnerships developed in over 80 countries.

Beyond �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder, Mortenson has made significant contributions to education and community development. She and Mort co-founded the Mortenson Family Foundation, which focuses on expanding opportunities for children and families, sustaining environmental systems and strengthening developing communities.

She established the Alice D. Mortenson/Petrovich Chair in Russian History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has served in leadership roles for numerous organizations, including Macalester College, Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches.

Two professors from the College of Arts and Sciences—Rebecca Safran and Tin Tin Su—and two professors from the College of Engineering and Applied Science—Aaron Clauset and R. Steven Nerem—have been elected 2025 fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

They are among nearly 500 scientists, engineers and innovators who have been recognized this year for their scientifically and socially distinguished achievements by one of the world’s largest general scientific societies and publisher of the Science family of journals. They also join a cohort of more than 80 �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder faculty members who previously received the honor.

Safran is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology who has led groundbreaking research on the evolution of new species; Su is a professor and the chair of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, whose research is leading to novel cancer therapies. Clauset is a professor of computer science and an internationally recognized expert on network science, data science and complex systems; Nerem is a professor of aerospace engineering and an expert in satellite remote sensing and geodesy.

A tradition dating back to 1874, election as an AAAS fellow is a lifetime honor, and all fellows are expected to meet the commonly held standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity. Distinguished past honorees include Alan Alda, Steven Chu, W.E.B DuBois, Thomas Edison, Grace Hopper, Ayanna Howard, Irwin Jacobs, Mae Jemison, Maria Mitchell and Ellen Ochoa.

“This year’s AAAS fellows have demonstrated research excellence, made notable contributions to advance science, and delivered important services to their communities,” said Sudip Parikh, AAAS chief executive officer and executive publisher of the Science journals. “These fellows and their accomplishments validate the importance of investing in science and technology for the benefit of all.”

College of Engineering and Applied Science: AAAS honors two �鶹��Ѱ��Engineering researchers as lifetime fellows

Aaron Clauset

Clauset has been a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and the BioFrontiers Institute since 2010. Clauset’s research interests are broad, from using computational analysis to predict ovarian cancer outcomes, to shining light on potential biases in journal paper acceptance.

In 2025, he made Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers list for demonstrating “broad and significant influence” in his field. He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the Erdos-Renyi Prize in Network Science. Clauset also serves as an external faculty member of the Santa Fe Institute.

Clauset said he is honored to be elected as a fellow of AAAS, a group that has long championed the role of science in society.

“Science offers the best way to find order and meaning in the complex and often chaotic world we live in. My research shows how powerful computational tools can reveal the hidden structures of complex systems, and helps us use that understanding for the public good,” he said.

“I am grateful to my students and colleagues at �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder. This honor reflects our shared commitment to using data-driven science to understand and, ultimately, improve the complex social structures we all inhabit.”

R. Steven Nerem

Nerem is an aerospace engineering expert with over 30 years of experience. He was recruited to �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder in 2000 as a full professor in the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences and currently serves as director of the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research.

Nerem uses satellite-based techniques to monitor changes in Earth’s shape and gravity field due to shifts in sea level, distribution of water and ice planetwide, and vertical crustal motion. The AAAS election makes Nerem the second member of his family to be part of the prestigious body.

“This is a great honor. I really enjoy doing research—it’s like a hobby,” Nerem said. “The most important thing to me about my selection is that my father, who passed away in 2020, was also an AAAS fellow, so it’s nice to follow in his footsteps.”

Nerem has been part of multiple NASA missions, including the ongoing GRACE-FO and Sentinel 6B satellites. He leads an active research group, with more than 480 publications, including 12 in 2025 alone. He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and was the inaugural recipient of the Earth Science and Applications Award from the American Astronautical Society.

R. Steven Nerem, Professor, Aerospace Engineering Sciences

Rebecca Safran

Safran, whose passion for biology took root in a plant taxonomy class during her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, is a professor in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She and her research team study the evolution of new species, focusing on the causes and consequences of individual variation across different scales of time and space.

Because studying the formation of new species can be difficult—since most species are millions of years old and what caused them to diverge from their ancestors often can’t be determined—Safran and her team study barn swallows, a very closely related group of populations of migratory birds that are currently diverging. This allows Safran and her team to study the process of speciation in real time.

Safran won a National Science Foundation Early Career Development award to study speciation in barn swallows across their entire, expansive breeding range throughout the Northern Hemisphere and Middle East. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when it wasn’t possible to conduct research in other countries, Safran and her team began focusing on the rapid decline in the population of barn swallows and its implications—using a highly integrative approach including behavioral, physiological and genetic perspectives.

Her team’s research has been published in more than 120 peer-reviewed journals, including Science, Nature and Current Biology. Safran also co-edited a recent book on speciation.

“None of this work is possible without the incredible collaboration with students, colleagues at �鶹��Ѱ��and around the world, private landowners who allow us to study populations of barn swallows on their properties and continuous funding support by the National Science Foundation and other agencies,” Safran says.

“I am especially honored to have worked with so many talented undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students.”

Tin Tin Su

Su is a professor in the department of Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology. Su, who attended Woodstock School in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India, credits her experiences there, in part, with helping her understand that her ideal environment is one in which “you do respect the elders or people who have had more experience or authority. But at the same time, if it doesn't seem right, you question it.”

Throughout her career, Su and her research colleagues have sought to develop new ways of attacking cancer. Through research on how tissues and organs regenerate after being damaged by X-rays in fruit flies, they synthesized the chemical SVC112, which helps prevent cancer cells from regrowing following radiation exposure. Su and her colleagues focused on the fruit fly because this insect shares more than 70% of disease-relevant genes with humans.

SVC112 is based on the chemical bouvardin found in the firecracker bush (Bouvardia ternifolia) that grows in the Southwest U.S. and Mexico. Su and her colleagues discovered that bouvardin can prevent regeneration of tissues in fruit flies.

More recently, Su, who also is a member of the �鶹��Ѱ��Cancer Center, and her colleague Antonio Jimeno, used SVC112 to target cancer stem cells in head and neck cancers. They are in the process of applying to the FDA to test SVC112 in human trials.

Su also has participated in the �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Community Perspectives Program, conducting outreach in several rural Colorado communities that led to a research collaboration with Colorado State University Pueblo to assess the effect of heavy metals on the genome in fruit fly and human cells.

“I do what I do because I love science,” Su says. “The potential to help cancer patients in Colorado and beyond makes it even better. So, to be named an AAAS fellow is really the cherry on top!”

The University of Colorado Board of Regents Finance Committee on Wednesday, March 11, advanced a proposal by �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder to purchase the site of a former car dealership at 1799 Exposition Drive in Boulder. If approved by the full board at its April meeting, the 18,919-square-foot facility would support the campus’s decarbonization goals by providing much-needed maintenance space capable of servicing �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder’s growing battery electric bus fleet.

�鶹��Ѱ��Boulder is currently under contract to purchase the property for $6.75 million, pending board approval.

The facility includes high-bay service space, appropriate ceiling height and utility capacity needed to maintain battery electric buses and light-duty vehicles. As �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder continues expanding its electric bus fleet under its Climate Action Plan, ensuring maintenance facilities can safely and effectively support that transition is critical.

“This facility positions us to align our maintenance capacity with the future of our transportation system sooner and at a lower cost than what it would take to renovate our existing facility,” said Todd Haggerty, senior vice chancellor for business, finance and infrastructure. “It marks a great example of aligning resources to help achieve campus priorities.”

If approved, light-duty and battery electric bus maintenance operations would relocate to Exposition Drive this year following closing of the purchase. Transit charging infrastructure and in-service bus staging south of Marine Street would remain unchanged, and no impacts to Buff Bus routes or daily transit operations are anticipated.

A newly acquired �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder facility, which was advanced by the University of Colorado Board of Regents Finance Committee, would support campus decarbonization efforts related to fleet electrification.

Spring break is just around the corner. Many campus services, including dining, bus transportation and residence hall front desk hours, will be reduced throughout spring break. Whether you live on or off campus, are staying in Boulder or heading out of town, take a moment to review some reminders.

Before you leave

Leaving for the break? Here are some reminders and tips for students living on and off campus.

On-campus residents

All residence halls, including Bear Creek and Weber Hall, will remain open for any resident throughout spring break. Hall access doors will be locked and accessible by current residents only.

Reminders:

Make sure windows are closed and locked, and blinds are closed.
Unplug electrical appliances (residence hall students only).
Clean your micro-fridge and set it to low (residence hall students only).
Remove all food and perishable items from the room.
Set your heaters on low.
Remove trash and recycling from the building.
Turn off your lights.
Make sure your room door is completely closed and locked.
Remember to pack all important documents or valuable items such as plane tickets, ID and passport, jewelry, medicines, etc.
Store any bikes in your room during breaks if space is available, and it does not block exits.

Off-campus residents

Reminders:

Before you leave, check with your landlord or find someone willing to clear snow off your property. Snow must be removed from sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall.
Ask a friend to collect your mail and pick up newspapers and any trash in your yard. If you’re gone for a longer period of time, consider having the Post Office hold your mail while you’re away.
Make sure all windows and doors are locked. Move expensive items such as laptops away from windows where they may be visible or bring them with you. Make sure your bike is securely locked or bring it inside if you can.
Set your lights on a timer and your heat to a reasonable temperature, about 60 degrees, to prevent pipes from freezing.
Don’t leave pets by themselves. Find someone to take care of them while you are away.

On-campus dining options will be limited during spring break—view dining hours and closures.

Buff Pantry

The Buff Pantry will be open Monday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to noon and Tuesday, March 17, from noon to 3 p.m. The Buff Pantry is in C4C N161.

Getting around campus

Traveling to DIA

Did you know you can travel to the Denver International Airport (DIA) for free with your Buff OneCard? With one stop adjacent to �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder at 16th and Broadway, the SkyRide leaves hourly from Boulder Station. Visit RTD’s SkyRide website for more details.

Buff Bus: There will be no Will Vill Buff Bus service during spring break (Saturday, March 14, through Saturday, March 21) and no Stampede service on Friday, March 20, (campus closed). Regular Will Vill bus service will resume on Sunday, March 22.

Late-night service: There will be no late-night service on Thursday, March 19; Friday, March 20; or Saturday, March 21.

Buff Ride: Buff Ride will offer service from Monday, March 16, through Thursday, March 19. There will be no Buff Ride service on Friday, March 20. Regular service will resume on Monday, March 23.

�鶹��Ѱ��NightRide

�鶹��Ѱ��NightRide will be open and operating this spring break to offer students a safe evening ride on campus and within Boulder city limits. NightRide will be closed March 20–22, and spring service hours will resume on March 23.

University Memorial Center

The UMC and The Connection will have an adjusted schedule with limited hours and closures. Check out the UMC website for operational schedules. The Alienware Buffalo Esports and Gaming Lounge will also be open with limited hours over spring break.

Rec Center

Review special spring break hours for the main Student Recreation Center and Williams Village Rec Center.

Medical Services

Wardenburg Health Center and the pharmacy will have adjusted hours over spring break.

New: �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder Medical Services has partnered with TimelyCare to offer all students free access to after-hours telehealth medical support. This includes evening and weekend care and support if you’re traveling or out of state.

Counseling & Psychiatric Services

Review spring break clinic hours, plus after-hours, crisis and emergency care.

New: �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder now offers free, flexible and confidential online counseling through BetterMynd, in addition to support at Counseling & Psychiatric Services.

Career Services

Career Services will offer limited virtual appointments March 16–19, and the photo booth will be available 8:15 a.m.–4:15 p.m. They will be closed Friday, March 20. Please check Buff Portal Advising for appointment times, or chat online to schedule an appointment.

University Libraries

Norlin Library will be open March 16–18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed March 19–22. Ask A Librarian services will be closed March 14–22. All other campus libraries will be closed March 14–22. Normal operations will resume Monday, March 23.

The university commencement ceremony is set for 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, at Folsom Field.

Davis, who was born in Boulder and whose father was a �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder psychology professor and her mother a �鶹��Ѱ��alum, has been recognized for her work in television, film and stage, and her advocacy for humanitarian and environmental issues.

"We are pleased to welcome Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated actor Kristin Davis back to Boulder to share her story," said Chancellor Justin Schwartz. "Her career reflects creativity, resilience and a deep commitment to making a difference beyond the screen—a message that will resonate with the Class of 2026.”

Davis has also starred in feature films including “Couples Retreat” opposite Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, “Deck the Halls,” “The Shaggy Dog,” “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” and Robert Rodriguez’s children’s adventure “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D.”

Prior to “Sex and the City,” she starred as the devious Brooke Armstrong in the pop culture phenomenon “Melrose Place.” Her additional television credits include the TNT original movie “The Winning Season,” co-starring Matthew Modine, as well as guest-starring roles on other iconic shows including “Will & Grace,” “Seinfeld,” “Friends,” “ER” and “The Larry Sanders Show.” In 2012 she executive produced and starred in the award-winning Lifetime original movie “Of Two Minds.” In 2016, she starred opposite Shirley MacLaine and Eric McCormack in Hallmark’s Hall of Fame, “A Heavenly Christmas.” She also has extensive theater credits including playing the role of Beth Gallagher in the stage production of “Fatal Attraction” in London's West End and a run on Broadway in Gore Vidal’s Tony Award-nominated iconic play “The Best Man”.

“Going into the 150th anniversary of CU, we knew we wanted a speaker that reflected this momentous occasion,” said Ally Young, Senior Class Council director. “It is always our priority to bring a speaker that will excite students and provide a unique perspective while also having a strong connection to �鶹��Ѱ��and the Boulder community. Senior Class Council is beyond excited to bring Kristin Davis to campus to deliver the 2026 commencement address."

An active philanthropist, Davis has worked to raise awareness to the plight of elephants and to stop illegal poaching for ivory before elephants become extinct in the wild. In 2014, she produced and financed the documentary “Gardeners of Eden” about the work Sheldrick Wildlife Trust does to help the elephants in the fight to save them from extinction. In September 2023, she was honored with The Perfect World Foundation Award for her significant contribution to the conservation of the planet’s wildlife and nature by increasing global awareness of the importance of protecting biodiversity.

Davis was selected by the Senior Class Council, which works throughout the academic year to identify a commencement speaker who will inspire graduates as they prepare to enter the next chapter of their lives.

The May 2 university commencement ceremony is free and open to the public, and tickets are not required.

Kristin Davis, best known for her role as Charlotte York in the HBO series "Sex and the City," will deliver the �鶹��Ѱ��Boulder spring 2026 commencement ceremony address.
